A partnership for a greener future: Reclaim the Rain visits JS Wright & Sons
JS Wright & Sons and Reclaim the Rain are proving commercial activity and environmental responsibility can and should work hand-in-hand.
We were delighted to welcome staff from Reclaim the Rain to our Coles Farm Works near Chelmsford recently. The visit was a fantastic opportunity to meet their team and provide a first-hand look at our operations and the process of turning timber from mature willow trees into high-quality cricket bat willow clefts. It’s always a pleasure to share our expertise, and this visit underscored an exciting collaboration rooted in a shared vision for sustainability.
A collaboration rooted in sustainability
In a pioneering partnership focused on environmental sustainability, JS Wright & Sons is actively collaborating with the eco-focused initiative, Reclaim the Rain. This enterprise reflects a shared mission: to enhance the management of our increasingly scarce water resources and to nurture our natural environment.
Reclaim the Rain is a joint initiative created by Suffolk and Norfolk County Councils. Their vital remit is to explore new and unique ways of creating resilient solutions for managing rainfall and floodwater, especially as the impact of climate change increases the likelihood of more extreme weather events.

Tackling flood risk, enhancing biodiversity
With flood risk on the rise across the UK, particularly in vulnerable regions such as East Anglia, innovative and nature-based solutions are essential. A major part of this new partnership involves planting willow trees on flood plains. Willows, with their high water absorption capacity, play a key role in reducing surface runoff, enhancing biodiversity and mitigating the impact of flooding.
Our role as a sustainability partner
Acting as a key sustainability partner, Reclaim the Rain bridges the gap between landowners and environmentally conscious business enterprises. As part of this invaluable collaboration, JS Wright & Sons works with growers on behalf of Reclaim the Rain, providing expertise to aid and assist efforts in implementing sustainable land practices through the strategic planting of willow trees.
Turning strategy into action across East Anglia
Already, willow tree saplings have been planted at multiple growing sites across East Anglia. These efforts are not only helping to create greener landscapes but are also actively enhancing natural flood defences in the region.
Together, JS Wright & Sons and Reclaim the Rain are proving commercial activity and environmental responsibility can and should work hand-in-hand. This partnership is a powerful example of how we can collectively develop a more sustainable, vibrant environment for the future.
