Our story. Our unrivalled reputation.
A family business with more than 130 years’ experience, we are the trusted guardians for preserving the traditional generation and re-generation of English Cricket Willow.
It all began in 1894 when Jessie Samuel Wright founded the company after being approached to supply willow trees to make cricket bats for WG Grace. Today, we supply top quality clefts to the world’s best known cricket bat makers.

Our unrivalled reputation is built on the following values and methods (which haven’t changed since 1894):
- No one else is as professional or as passionate about the craft of growing and supplying English cricket willow
- We treat every client the same, whether they own one acre or thousands of acres
- We fell trees all year round (weather permitting) and plant from December to March
- We oversee a huge planting programme to ensure future demand is met
Our customers and growers know when it comes to providing an immaculate service that leaves their land in prime condition, we always do it Wright.
Anything else is just not cricket.

Nick Wright
I joined the family business in 1960, and still work full time even now. My son, Oliver, and I handle the inspecting and valuing of clients’ English cricket willow. We also survey potential new planting sites. I have particular interest in wildlife, sport, and World War II aircraft having spent a few years in the RAF in my younger days.

Jeremy Ruggles
I have been working for JS Wright & Sons since learning grading as young man from my grandfather. I joined permanently in 1986 and became a director in 1994. I am now co-owner of the business with Nick, mainly responsible for running the yard, grading blades, and working with customers. My hobbies include watching cricket, travel, and shooting. I am married to Cheryl and have two daughters, Emma and Lauren.

Oliver Wright
I joined JS Wright & Sons in 2005, having spent the previous fifteen years working in London. My main role is the inspecting and valuing of clients’ English cricket willow, which involves extensive travel throughout England and Wales. We take great pride in the quality of our service, and the integrity of our business and how we work with our clients. My hobbies include sport and travel, and I have two daughters who are growing up rapidly.
