The Lions in Chennai: why we’re backing the England over 60s
Our commitment to cricket goes beyond the the supply of willow. While much of our work focuses on the literal willow tree “roots” of the game, we believe it is equally important to support those who have dedicated decades to the sport. This is why we are proud to support the England Over 60s Lions as they prepare for their upcoming tour of India.
An injustice?
It is a frustrating reality that while these elite athletes wear the Three Lions and represent their country on the world stage, they receive no funding from the ECB. Every penny for kit, travel, and logistics must be raised by the players themselves through sponsors and local support. For a side that is currently performing at the top of their game, we believe this lack of official backing is a missed opportunity to celebrate the lifelong reach of our national sport.
Proven success
The Lions aren’t traveling for fun; they are a formidable competitive force. Looking back at 2025, the team played 13 matches, securing nine victories against international opposition including the USA, West Indies, and Australia. We are particularly proud to follow the progress of Neil Jackson, a friend of JSW, who made an impressive Lions debut last summer, becoming one of only three batters to pass the 50-mark during the match in Marton.
More than just a game
Beyond the scorecards, the England Over 60s program highlights a vital message: the importance of staying active. Engaging in competitive sport well into our senior years is essential for Physical Health, Mental Wellbeing, and Quality of Life, and these players set a positive example.
The road to Chennai
On 25th January, the Lions depart for what promises to be a memorable tour of India. They will have the honour of playing against the Veterans Cricket India Chairman’s XI at the iconic Chennai Super Kings Ground. We are proud to have placed an advert in their tour programme to help fund this journey. We wish Manager Paul Gelder, Captain Jason Caunt, and the entire squad the best of luck.
Go Lions!
