Beyond the boundary: welcoming Joe Root to our factory
It is not everyday you can say you’ve met a sporting hero – and one of the most famous cricketers on the planet. Let alone the fact it comes as part of a visit to our proud business. But for four fascinating hours, we were humbled and privileged to host top England batsman Joe Root.
As part of a visit organised by New Balance, of which Joe is a global brand ambassador, the England Test record run-scorer spent time talking to our directors about the scale of our operation and how 75% of the world’s cricket bats are made from our willow.
We also gave him a glimpse into the aftercare we provide for landowners, the critical role we play in growing more trees for future generations, and the fact our business is proudly more than 130 years old. It was a business highlight and one shared with all our staff who got time to speak with Joe about their individual roles within JS Wright & Sons – and even grab a quick photo with the England star.
Speaking on behalf of JS Wright & Sons, director Oliver Wright said: “It was a fantastic visit. It’s always nice to meet the top players who use our products – and they don’t get much bigger than Joe Root. “It means a lot to us when the players come and see us and see the operation from start to finish. We would like to say a massive thank you to Joe and everyone who helped organise the visit.” Joe also kindly presented us with a signed New Balance cricket bat, which is now proudly displayed in our boardroom.
Joe said: “I am fascinated by the game of cricket and obviously my cricket bats are the vital tool in my armoury. So to see where the English Willow for my New Balance bats come from was fantastic. I would like to thank JS Wright and all the staff members for such an interesting visit.”
